This painting is inspired by research image #2 and artistic influences such as abstract expressionism, surrealism, and biomorphism. I carved into my painting and added layers of encaustic paint, shellac and oil pigment to represent the feelings experienced by people dealing with ALS and that of their caregivers, like fear, pain, frustration and hope.
Strange, eyeball-like forms emerged from the biomorphic forms of the stretched and deteriorating spinal cord represented by the radiating lines creating a sense of movement and depth. The color palette features cool tones such as blues, grays, and whites, with a slightly jarring contrast from hints of red, black and gold. The thick, expressive brushstrokes and rough texture create an eerie, almost surreal quality.
ALS causes the body to fail while the mind remains active. It is my intention that the eye-like imagery evokes a sense of awareness and understanding. Relevant to the communication between diminishing neurons, resulting muscle atrophy and loss of movement, the eyes also symbolize a window into the soul... The overall effect evokes a cluster of surreal, otherworldly creatures or neural structures, suggesting watchfulness and interconnectedness.
