Forward Together

Encaustic, pan pastel & pencil on panel

Forward Together borrows the colors and patterns of a neural network of brain cell destruction seen in Image #3. In painting the snow, I was challenged to find a brush fine enough to add thin touches to the smaller branches. From a branch of palm, blessed at a Palm Sunday mass years ago, I pulled a thread-like strand from the stalk and used it as my paintbrush. It is now a part of my sacred brush collection.
The scene suggests being lost in the winter woods in deep snow and impending darkness. But when imagining the scene in the company of a friend or a family member for companionship and support, the landscape feels far less ominous. The glow of sunset on the horizon is more noticeable and a path more apparent. Similarly, human support from family and friends makes all the difference to a patient suffering from a devastating illness.
