Disrupted Flow

Encaustic, watercolor, oil & copper leaf on panel
Inspired by photo #38 x 8 x .75 inches
Disrupted Flow captures the delicate, yet fragile, dance of the brain's neural network. The image begins with the shape of a hand, its outline drawn in soft, intersecting lines that mimic the intricate pathways of neurons. These lines form a web of interconnected shapes, evoking the dynamic communication channels of the brain. The rounded corners and smooth intersections speak to the seamless, continuous flow of electrical signals when healthy.
Inside the hand, hues of blue watercolor evoke the cool, cerebral energy of the brain, while purple and green circles symbolize the vital nodes that send and receive messages. These organic forms represent both the complexity and vulnerability of the neural network. The gentle yellow areas on the outside suggest the loss of connection, a fading signal, representing the disruption caused by ALS. Together, the work mirrors the intricate balance between connection and disintegration, all while highlighting the profound silence that occurs when motor neurons deteriorate and communication is severed.
This piece is not just a visual representation, but an emotional exploration of both the beauty of life’s electrical impulses and the devastating effects of disease on the body’s communication system.
