Broken Symmetry

Photo encaustic on panel
Inspired by photo #310 x 8 x .06 inches
Sometimes our hearts flood with everything being thrown at us.
In biology symmetry breaking occurs continuously and indeed, is a condition for life. This symmetry breaking is, however, always incomplete: completely broken symmetry is complete disorder, which could not sustain life. Correspondingly, perfect order and global symmetry would also be incompatible with life. The informational content of a perfectly symmetric system is inadequate for the complex functions of life. Life exists in the intermediate realm between order and disorder...When water freezes the axis orientation of the ice crystals is random this is an example of spontaneous symmetry breaking.'
In the photo encaustic piece, Broken Symmetry - the frozen rose is a beautiful life seized, the air a frozen breath, the veining similar in shape to a neural network of brain cells affected in ALS, is carved into the encaustic and filled with an iridescent oil stick representing the hope for healing, that never leaves us, and will mottle itself into the deepest despair. A piece framed in hope represented by the sides of the cradleboard painted in a Deep Woods shade of metallic.
