Aspire for Love

Encaustic, beeswax crayons, ink, paper & encaustic monotype on panel
Inspired by photo #1
10 x 10 x 1 inches
Jumping off the idea of the duality between the stunningly beautiful scientific research images and the devastating disease that is ALS, I aimed to recreate the research image in an encaustic representation and then add some tweaks to bring about a message of love. I hoped ultimately to change the dialogue from thoughts of atrophy, deterioration, loss and disruption to those of healing, hope, light and love.
For the creation of this piece, I printed some encaustic monotypes using a similar palette to reflect the atrophy of the microscopic skeletal muscle of the given scientific image. Those prints were then collaged and used as a base on a wood panel from which I then layered dyed papers, encaustic paint and beeswax crayon. I also utilized focused heat with a small torch to create added effects and texture.
